Stop Motion

I have taught stop motion to small groups of students, however I decided to throw caution to the wind and teach it to my whole class this year. The results are immaculate:

This project took a couple of hours and some examples, but they did amazing.

To begin, I showed the students 3 videos including stop motion. We watched one on The Very Hungry Catterpillar

Next, we watched a short paper stop motion video

And finally, I showed a video that included the process

We then made a little plan for our video and got started making our scenes.

It was a messy process but worth it. Once the scenes were made, I walked students through using the ipad app Stop Motion Studio. They played around with it a bit, taking stop motion pictures of each other. It took some prompting to focus on taking pictures of the smallest movements to make it look seamless. I had a couple of kids who really grasped the animation and began teaching others (the goal of every class really). This is my first time doing this with a third grade class and I'll definitely do it in the future.

Enjoy the animations!
