"“One of the most important pedagogical tasks is to help students formulate something the say that matters to them.”
Eisner, 2003, p. 98
How do we foster creativity in the art class?
Giving choice and autonomy in the classroom and applauding ideas and art that uses the lesson goal in a way that is unique to the student (see environment plan to help with this).
Choice an autonomy are necessary for student regulation and learning. When we remove any opportunity for choice in our lessons, we are likely to see students stress cycle hijack their pre-frontal cortex which results in a negative reaction. When we plan for an infuse choice in our lessons, we are more likely to see positive emotions. Art gives us the opportunity to give students time to feel and think. When they have the opportunity to think and feel, they have more opportunity to share what matters to them, we give them a voice.
