Alma Thomas Artist Feature

The past few weeks we learned all about Alma Thomas.

To start, we listened to "Ablaze with Colour" and then did a thinking routine from Thinking Palette, a version of creative comparisons.

Materials we used:

-paper

-paint (either tempera or acrylic)

For Kindergarten:

For Kindergarten I added a heart element since it's leading up to Valentine's day. Students got a 9x9 piece of paper to paint with acrylic. Once the background was complete, I had photocopied hearts onto cardstock. Students coloured the hearts with oil pastels, cut the hearts out, and then glued them to the background.

For a group without paint:

Once group we weren't in the art room so we created our art using oil pastels rather than paint.

All other groups:

After going through the presentation and completing the thinking routine, we talked about the things we appreciated about Alma's work that we wanted to incorporate into our own. Some students focused on the circular shape, some focused on the colours, some focused on the dashes, while others focused on all three.
